Each year ARS offers a variety of extracurricular programs for students who are looking to expand their horizons. Our Friday afternoon Clubs offer opportunities for students to develop socially through engaging activities which develop and strengthen character, leadership skills, and social skills. ARS Clubs offer students an opportunity to enlarge their interests and knowledge. Activities vary from year to year but have ranged from everything from Dance to Ping Pong, from Animation to Origami and from Mandarin to Yoga.
Led by our talented music teacher, Francisco Roldan, the ARS Singers meet once a week to rehearse a variety of musical favorites including this one …
The ARS Student Council gives leadership opportunities to students in grades 2 through 5. The role of the Student Council is to represent the student body to the school’s administration, Parents’ and Alumni Associations. For example, the Student Council representatives might identify a particular after school activity that students would like to participate in and lobby the administration for its inclusion. The Council representatives also promote and encourage student involvement in organizing school activities such as the annual Carnival, which benefits our sister school, The Jacaranda School for Orphans in Malawi, the Valentine’s Day Breakfast, and the Halloween Party. They also help with auditions, rehearsals and serve as MC’s at the Annual ARS Talent Show, organize our canned food drives and arrange our Holiday Sing Along
Pen Pals with Jacaranda School for Orphans
The third graders at ARS engage in a Pen Pal program with the Jacaranda School for Orphans. Through letters exchanged over the course of the year, students will have the opportunity to not only strengthen their written communication skills but also connect with peers on the other side of the globe.
The School Newspaper
The ARS News is reported and published by our 4th and 5th grade students working together. It is published once a trimester and deals with matters that are of special interest to our students.
Our Friday morning assemblies help our students develop good public speaking and performing skills as well as develop an understanding of what it is to be a good audience member. Each grade has the opportunity to perform a minimum of twice a year. We also invite outside speakers to address our student body. Parents are welcome to attend.
Poetry at Dawn
Once a week Poetry at Dawn is held from 7:30 to 8:00am. The students read and discuss poetry, then write their own poems based on the same themes, rhythms and styles they’ve read. This program culminates in an assembly of poetry reading and recitation.
Our students have access to two nearby community gardens where they enjoy planting and harvesting. They learn how to identify plants and are introduced to different agricultural practices from around the world and throughout history. For example, the students partner with the children from the Jacaranda School for Orphans to learn about their agricultural practices and exchange gardening interests, and aspirations for a greener, more ecologically sound planet.
